Transcript - Sheena Easton

Undercover Ros: Hey there everyone!
Undercover Ros: Our guest today is the one and only...SHEENA EASTON!!!
Undercover Ros: Sheena has just joined us so we're about to kick off the Chat
Undercover Ros: Please welcome SHEENA EASTON!!!!!.

Sheena: Hi, it's great to be here and it's wonderful to be here to answer your questions - so fire away!

Question: All my friends know you as the 'morning train singer'. Do you get sick of singing it?

Sheena: Sometimes. It's kind of like if ice-cream is your favourite desert, you don't want to eat it every night but in my concerts I feel as if I owe it to the fans to give them the hits they know and love, as well as new material.

Question: do you get back to Scotland often?

Sheena: Not very often. My family live in England now and I've lived in California for 20 years.

Question: What is Prince like? Is he as tortured as he comes across?

Sheena: Well I've never tortured him!

Question: What was it like winning a Grammy?

Sheena: Any award you receive from your peer group is kind of validation that you've won some sort of recognition of respect amongst people doing the same job. It's very validating when you are new in the industry to get awards. It kind of boosts your self esteem

Question: Has the music scene changed much since the '80's?

Sheena: Hell yeah! Of course it has! The whole world has changed much since the '80's. In the united States, rap music and country music dominate radio and that certainly wasn't the case in the early '80's.

Question: Your album Fabulous is great!!! What made you choose to do a 'covers' album?

Sheena: It's kind of like an irresistible temptation to be able to record the songs that you sing in the shower. Even if your job is to be a professional singer, we still dork out at home. That's what this album is...it's my chance to be a teenager again

Question: I see in your discography that you appear on Barney's Great Adventure. What was that about?

Sheena: That's true. That's a little known fact. I have two small children, a 5 and a 6 year old. When they made the Barney's Great Adventure feature movie, they approached several artists to make a compilation album. Even though it was never destined to be a commercial success, I knew that my kids would love it, so I basically did it for my own kids. The song I sing on the track is a lullaby.

Question: Is there anyone who you would love to perform or record with?

Sheena: Yes, many people. I would love to be produced by George Michael. I would make tea for Joni Mitchell or clean her car, anything to be in the studio and watch her work and I'd love to a duet with Luther Vandross.

Question: Recording video clips. Is it fun or just plain hard work?

Sheena: I used to hate with a capitol H making videos. It was nothing but a chore. It was kind of something you had to do in order to have your music accepted in the visual medium (ie television). In the early '80's the music variety format was pretty much replaced by MTV so video was your only source to be seen on television with your music. However, in this new album Fabulous, I had a great time making the video for Giving Up Giving In because I kind of surrendered my negative attitude and just gave myself over to having a good time.

Question: will you tour the latest album?

Sheena: No, I won't tour the latest album, other than media promotion

Question: How did you get involved with the bond movie people?

Sheena: At the time I was new on the scene and had just had a huge hit with Morning Train 9 to 5, so I guess I captured the attention of the producer and they asked if I would like to join a long line of artists who have had the privilege of being part of what has now become a cult in the movie industry.

Question: would you rather be an actor than a singer?

Sheena: probably not because that involves location work and a commitment to a large proportion of your time away from home, much in the same way a concert tour does. Now I have two small children, I don't want to uproot them from school. So I integrate my travel and work schedule to suit their schedule

Question: I hear you used to tour with your Mum. Are you still close to her?

Sheena: My manager is a female who has a daughter my age so I think that is how that rumour got started. My mother has never been involved in my professional life in any shape or form. I am very close to my mother but we keep it on a mother daughter basis and not a work related basis.

Question: Do you have much to do with your website?

Sheena: Very much so. I try to keep my fans updated through the website. We provide them with information on upcoming events and performances and I like to include a personal letter to the fans a couple of times a year. That of course is my official website. As you are probably aware, there are many other unofficial websites that are unendorsed by me. My official website is http://www.sheenaeaston.com

Question: One of my favourite songs growing up was "Best of my love" Why did you choose to cover that song?

Sheena: It was one of my favourite songs too. It is such an uplifting melody and lyric. It always made me feel good everytime I heard it.

Question: Who is your favorite NBA team?

Sheena: The Lakers! That's a no-brainer!

Question: What do you think about napster?

Sheena: I think it could ruin our industry

Question: What is your opinion of the current crop of starlets, Christina? Britney?

Sheena: I'm asked that often. I have a great deal of respect for their talent. Believe me, I know how hard it is to do what they are doing at such a young age. Was there at that age myself. One of the major differences is that I wasn't expected to dance.

Question: Do you think Prince assisted your career just by being there?

Sheena: Yes. He was a very influential producer. He wrote and produced commercial and critically accepted songs for me in the '80's and he inspired me in the studio to reach out and grow as an artist in my own right. When someone you respect, respects you in return, it gives you confidence to attempt things that you otherwise would have though you couldn't do.

Question: Is there any Australian artists you like?

Sheena: Kylie

Question: What does the future hold for Sheena Easton?

Sheena: I'm sure a lot more recording and live theatre performances. No doubt return engagements in Las Vegas. I want to finish my children's album that I'm working on and on a personal level allow myself the luxury of less time at work and more time at home

Undercover Ros: thanks for being here Sheena. It's been a real pleasure!

Sheena: Thank you for talking to me today. I hope that you keep in touch with me through the website. I really do get to read those emails, even if they are forwarded to me a week later. http://www.sheenaeaston.com
